At 51 feet she is nearing the top end for sailing double handed, at least for us average mortals.

Perhaps the most necessary feature of a large offshore sailboat. Steering is tiring!

Sv AURORA Ship's Stamp and Logo

What does it mean?

Center of Effort

The two concentric circles divided by crossed lines is used on a sailboat design blue print to point the "center of effort", the point where all the forces acting on the ship are blanced. Balance of many types is the success to any voyage at sea.

The Sea Horse

Throughout history, he Sea Horse elicits an almost mystical appeal. It's symbolism for magic and luck is found across many cultures and it is universally recognized as a sea creature.

The Anchor
As much as we love the sea, we know we must return to the shore, and a safe harbor in which to drop anchor in is one of the most relieving experiences as sailor can have.

The Dolphin

Dolphins and porpoises are our favorite sea creatures. Their intelligence and playfulness never cease to amaze us and we always look forward to our next exciting encounter with them!

The Pineapple

From the time of Colombus, pineapples (originally from Brasil and Paraguay)  were revered for their rarity and difficulty in keeping fresh on the return from a long voyage. Sea Captains would return home and place them on fencepost to signify a successful voyage. In New England it is still common to see bronze pineapple door knockers and fence adornments.

" Be Excellent to Each Other"

No, it is NOT Bill and Ted!

Captain Cook

Capt Cook took the HMS Endeavour on an epic three year voyage around the world from  1768-1771. It was never designed as an exploratory vessel.

The motto

"Be Excellent to Each Other" embodied Cook's desire to ensure the fair treatment and comaraderie of the crew while endrung the harsh conditions of the sea. This was not a common ehtic of the time , but served them well! The quote was also later adopted by Abraham Lincoln.

See it for yourself!

An amazingly faithful reproduction of the original HMS Endeavour can be toured at the  Australian National Marine Museum in Darling Harbour, Sydney Australia. We vistied it and we extremely impressed at the accuracy thoroughness of the vessel over 200 years later!

Fun Fact

The HMS Endeavour was scuttled in Newport Rhode Island on August 04, 1778, which is AURORA's Home Port!

ARURORA's known History

History

1982

Early Days

Built in Taiwan, imported to San Francisco area where it was sold to a consortium that went bankrupt. Boat was in storage and stripped of many componements. Purchased by professional Captains, Ken and Antoinette Coffer, and fully fitted. Named, Antoinette

1980s-1990s

At Sea!

The Coffers sailed around California, then three years in Hawaii and finally through the Panama Canal and on to Fort Lauderdale.

2000s-2018

Extreme Makover, Sailing Edition

Continuing intensive refit by the Coffers including, paint, new engine, new sails, new genset, varnish interior, new wiring, new plumbing and fuel tanks. The Coffers plans changed and we bought her in October 2017. The refit was 90% complete, so as the saying goes, only 90% left to do! We took a fresh approach to all safety systems and replaced all chainplates. Today, she shows almost as new and has updated and robust mehanical and safety systems. Ready for any ocean and made for a fine voyage from Fort Lauderdale to Newport in March 2018 topped off with a blizzard on the last day!

Summer 2018

Lots of fine finishing items and short trips to Cuttyhunk, Block Island and Mystic getting ready for the 550nm trip to Bras D'or Nova Scotia!
